WHERE TO START?

THE BEGINNING I SUPPOSE, BUT WHICH BEGINNING? MY FATHERS PARENTS? MY MOTHERS PARENTS? OR BEFORE THAT?

SO I WENT TO THE HIGHER CEMETRY AT EXETER AND TOOK NOTES FROM THE GRAVESTONES. MY FIRST RESULTS SHOWED MY IMMEDIATE GRANDPARENTS AND DEAD UNCLES AND AUNTS.

BIRTHS AND DEATHS

Luigi Forte born 1834 I do not know where Luigi died or where he was buried.
Domenico Forte born 1 March 1870    died 23 July 1929           aged 59. 31 at the time of the 1901 census.

Married Louisa Coccoza. About 1890. Died about 1899.              2 children Angelo & Lucia.

Angelo Forte       born 1899                  died June 1940                aged 41

Lucia Forte.        Born 1898

Married Pacifica Forte   about 1900    born 4 August 1880 died 16 March 1953        aged 73

Giovanni Forte    born 1901                  died 23 July 1954            aged 53

Michele Forte      born 1907                  died 13 November 1939. aged 32

Antonia Forte     born 28June 1908      died 4 May 1991             aged 83

Louisa Forte        born 1916                  died 15 December 1943. aged 27

Philomena Forte born 18 May 1919    died 25 January 2002       aged 83

Teresa Webber    born 3 January 1938 died 3 November 1997     aged 59

Mary Forte          born 1947                  died 30 June 1989            aged 42

Next I paid my money and accessed the 1901 Census.

I discovered that although they had been given the responsibility for recordinng everyones details for the census the actual census takers were not necassarily very caring or intelligent. This resulted in some strange NAME spellings throughout the census. My grandfathers surname was recorded as TORTE not Forte.

BELOW IS THE EXTRACT FROM THE HAND WRITTEN PAGE ABOVE. AS CAN BE SEEN THE CENSUS OFFICER DECIDED ON THE ENTRY CONVERTING AN `F` to a `T`.

THE PEOPLE NAMED AS LODGERS AT MY GRANDFATHERS HOUSE WERE PROBABLY SENT FOR BY HIM FROM ITALY TO HELP IN SELLING ICE CREAM OR HELPING IN ONE OF THE SHOPS.

THIS WAS COMMON PRACTICE AND THOSE BROUGHT OVER SERVED SOME TIME IN PAYMENT OF THE OPPORUNITY PROVIDED FOR THEM, HOWEVER `IN JUSTICIA` AFTER SEVERAL YEARS WHEN THEY HAD LEARNT THE LANGUAGE, THEY WERE FREE TO PURSUE THEIR OWN BUSINESSES FOR THEMSELVES , OFTEN WITH A LITTLE FINANCIAL HELP FROM THEIR BENEFACTOR.
